What is a Keyhole Surgery?

Minimally Invasive Surgery (MIS)/Minimal Access Surgery (MAS) is a  kind of surgery which is getting more and more popular now a days. It  is also known as 'endoscopic surgery'. With this method, a surgical operation is performed by the help of:

  • a small endoscopic camera or a microscope

  • several long, thin, rigid/flexible instruments

Through natural body openings or small artificial incisions. Thus it is also caled 'keyhole surgery'.

Advantage of minimal access surgery

  • Less tissue trauma  and  blood loss

  • Less postoperative pain and faster recovery

  • Shorter hospital stay with better cosmetic results and  smaller scars

Disadvantages of minimal access surgery

  • Lack of tactile feedback and thus increased technical expertise required

  • Possible longer duration of surgery and increased risk of iatrogenic injuries

  • Difficult removal of bulky organs

  • More expensive and huge investments in instrumentation leading to potentially higher cost per surgery
